Gearing Up
At the recent (July 2023) Camp Shomria Perth reunion, I (foolishly) volunteered to make a quilt(s) from the Shomria t-shirts amassed over the years. What was I thinking? So the Where I know. The Why I am still iffy about - I love Shomria. So now all that's left is What? How? When?
I had originally leaned towards a lap size quilt, but after consulting
with Dee, I have decided to do twin size-ish because, as she pointed
out, the lap size is too small to cover yourself when lying down on a
sofa, and two small for two to cuddle under. I guess that's the What.
What I think is Quilt As You Go quilts. Quilt As You Go (QAYG) is a technique where you make and quilt the blocks individually and then assemble the quilted blocks, usually with sashing. If you're not a quilter, traditional quilts are usually made like a sandwich: the top is made from blocks which are sewn together in rows, and then the rows sewn together, the middle is the batting, and the back is either one large piece of fabric or it could also be pieced. I love doing baby quilts - they're small and can usually be manipulated for stitching on a home sewing machine. Anything bigger than the baby quilt is always a stitching headache for me. With QAYG, the stitching is done in the blocks individually so the bulk isn't there when assembling the quilt. So that's the How.
The When will be whenever it gets done...
First step will be washing and sorting the t-shirts.
